Name: CASSOWARY BONE KNIFE (ornamented)
Time: c. 19th - 20th century
Location: Abelam Tribe, Maprik Culture, Papua New Guinea
These daggers are individually hand-made in the Maprik/Wosera area by members of the Abelam Tribe of Papua, New Guinea. They are carved from the thighbone of the Cassowary bird, and many are engraved with ancestral and clan designs. Metal knives have all but replaced them for everyday needs, but these bone knives are still made in the East Sepik Province, the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, and the Asmat area of Irian Jaya. They are worn tucked into a woven band on the upper arm or into a wide belt. They can be used for fighting, hunting, and digging, as well as ceremonial purposes such as decoration for the singsing dance.
