Location: Egypt

This strong figure, originally carved from palm wood, is something of an enigma. The body is that of a Egyptian male, wearing a pleated white linen kilt associated with nobility, in the classic left-foot-forward posture. The head, however, is that of a baboon, which was viewed as a god throughout almost all of Egyptian history. He was also the revered god-animal selected by Thoth, a god considered the inventor of writing, language and magic. Thoth, however, is typically depicted as an ibis-headed figure. The purpose of this solemn figure, and what it was originally carrying in its outstretched arms, is now lost in time.
