The Chavin de Huantar people - called Chavin - of north central Peru were the first of the many Andes Cultures and were a ferocious and brutal people. This war instrument is one example of the weaponry used against an enemy. The Chavin began in 1200 B.C. and were the dominant culture of Northern Peru, reaching their peak about 400 B.C. They spread their religious influence throughout the region and continued up to 1200 A.D. Although intended for war, this exact recreation of the original stone mace head shows the surprising artistry of the piece and illustrates the extraordinary stone carving skill of the culture.
