Name: DUAL MARRIAGE MUGS
Time: c. AD 1200
Location: Anasazi Culture, Mesa Verde, CO, USA
Flat bottomed drinking mugs were only produced in the Mesa-Verde region from about 800 AD to 1300 AD. On rare occasions the Anasazi created two identical mugs, joining them with upper and lower stems of clay. The lower stem was drilled out permitting liquid to move freely between the two mugs. Many archeologists believe that these rare vessels were part of a joining ceremony, our equivalent to marriage. The design guarantees that any liquid placed in a mug will always be shared equally between the participants. The black upper and lower horizontal framing bands on the mugs represent sky and earth respectively. The stair step motif in between signifies a safe journey. The original of this piece was excavated in the Bear Tooth Ruins in Colorado. It was found broken and scattered on the floor of a Kiva, perhaps as a conclusion to the ceremony. Each exquisite reproduction is individually hand thrown, fired and painted by an artist/archeologist to be as faithful to the original as possible.
